The box contains 150 Question Cards, ten Number Cards, and a scoring mat. At the beginning of a round, one participant becomes the Organizer. Each player secretly receives a Number Card from one to ten, and the Organizer reads a question aloud. The number determines how mild or extreme each answer should be. For example, a question may ask players to name something that ranges from harmless to dangerous. A player holding a low number should provide a restrained answer, while someone with a high number should suggest something more serious.
Players answer one at a time without revealing their numbers or using direct numerical hints. After hearing every response, the Organizer must place the players in ascending order based only on the perceived intensity of their answers. The Number Cards are then revealed to check the sequence. Because people may interpret the same prompt differently, the Organizer must consider both the wording of each response and the way the group usually evaluates situations.
A standard round follows these steps:
That Escalated Quickly does not have traditional levels, maps, unlockable stages, or increasing computer-controlled difficulty. Progress is represented by successful and unsuccessful Question Cards. If the Organizer creates the correct sequence, the team records a good result. If the order contains too many mistakes, the group receives a bad result. The number of mistakes permitted in a round may change according to the number of participants.
