Participants form two teams and sit in alternating positions. The active team selects a Neanderthal Poet, while a nearby member of the opposing team becomes the Judge and holds the NO! Stick. The Poet chooses which side of the Poetry Cards will be used throughout the match. The box contains 200 cards, a timer, two scoring slates, an inflatable club, and additional cards for an optional poetry activity.
Each Poetry Card presents an easier word worth one point and a related phrase worth three points. The Poet may begin with either target and gives verbal clues until teammates guess correctly. After receiving the one-point answer, the Poet can secure that point or continue toward the complete phrase. Successfully identifying the three-point phrase gives the team a maximum of three points from that card.
The Poet must follow several restrictions:
The Judge watches the clues and stops play when the Poet violates a restriction. The failed card gives a point to the opposing team, and the active player immediately draws another. Correct cards are placed on the appropriate section of the Poet Point Slate. When time expires, the results are transferred to the team’s scoring area, and the other team selects its next Poet and Judge.
Poetry for Neanderthals does not contain levels, maps, upgrades, or unlockable stages. Progress is measured through accumulated points and the number of completed Poet turns. After every participant has acted as Poet three times, both teams calculate their totals, and the higher score wins. Two-player and three-player variants adjust the roles and scoring because standard teams are not possible. Effective clue giving requires constructing short sentences from simple words rather than listing disconnected associations. Players should also decide when a three-point phrase is achievable and when securing the easier word is the safer choice.
