Happy Salmon is a simultaneous-action card game in which players search for partners performing the same activity. Everyone plays at once, so there is no turn order, central draw pile, or scoring track. The objective is to complete matching actions and discard an entire personal deck before anyone else. The game has no story, characters with abilities, or campaign. It supports three to eight participants, and a typical round lasts about ninety seconds.

Preparing the Personal Decks

The cards are separated by color into eight identical decks. Every player selects one color, shuffles its twelve cards, and holds the stack face down. Unused color decks remain outside the game. Standing around a small table is recommended because the actions require players to reach one another and occasionally exchange positions. Once the group finishes a countdown, everyone turns the deck over so only the top card is visible.

Finding a Partner in Real Time

Each participant repeatedly calls out the action shown on their visible card while listening for someone announcing the same phrase. When two players find each other, they perform the matching movement together and discard their cards. The next card becomes visible immediately, and both participants begin searching again. If three people announce the same action, only the first pair to connect can discard; the remaining player must continue searching.

The standard deck contains three copies of four actions:

  • High Five requires partners to touch their open palms.
  • Fish Bump uses a front-knuckle fist bump.
  • Happy Salmon requires both players to slap each other’s forearms at least twice.
  • Switch It Up makes the partners trade positions around the table.
  • A player may move an unmatched card to the bottom of the deck temporarily.
  • Every skipped card must still be completed before that player can win.
  • Discarded cards no longer return during the current round.

Winning Through Fast Matching

Happy Salmon does not contain levels, missions, maps, upgrades, or elimination stages. Progress is represented by the shrinking personal deck, so every completed action brings a player directly closer to victory. The first participant to discard all twelve cards wins immediately. Other players do not need to finish their remaining actions once a winner is declared, making it easy to reset the decks and begin another short round.

A Silent Variant removes all spoken communication and requires players to identify partners through gestures and observation. The three-player setup also modifies the decks: Fish Bump Cards are removed and replaced with additional copies of the other three actions. Effective play depends on making the current action visible, listening for matching calls, and switching attention quickly after every discard. Players should also keep their deck together while changing positions and clear enough space around the table before starting.
