Robert’s journey through VHOLUME is shaped by the city itself, because every district forces the player to solve movement problems in a different way. After his family’s ration tickets are revoked, he has to cross Ministry-controlled areas and reach the institutions connected to the decision. The narrative provides the reason for moving forward, while the actual progression comes from navigating large spaces, learning their structure, and improving the route through each level.

Running alone is rarely enough. Robert can jump, climb, and slide, and the most effective way to move is to combine these actions without unnecessary stops. A jump can lead into a climb, while a landing may be followed immediately by a slide or another sprint. The environments are built around this system, using height differences, gaps, walls, narrow ledges, and open spaces to test how well the player can preserve momentum.
VHOLUME changes the layout and rhythm of its levels as the journey continues. Residential blocks feel different from tunnels or Ministry interiors, and industrial sections demand a different way of reading the environment. Some routes are direct, while others hide useful alternatives.
The player can encounter:
· apartment buildings and residential complexes;
· Ministry offices and administrative areas;
· underground tunnels and sewers;
· industrial machinery and mechanical structures;
· jungle-covered sections;
· dam environments;
· fairground areas;
· optional B-Side challenges.
Exploration matters because many stages contain shortcuts or less obvious paths. A player who only follows the first visible route can still finish, but repeated attempts often reveal a cleaner or faster way through the same section. Collectibles add another reason to inspect side areas and unusual structures.
Once a level is understood, the challenge changes. Target times encourage players to return and optimize movement instead of simply searching for the exit. Ghost runs can also show how another attempt handles the same course, giving hints about quicker jumps or more efficient lines.
The main skill in VHOLUME is therefore route refinement. Early runs are about survival and orientation, while later ones are about removing hesitation. Players gradually learn which climbs can be skipped, where a slide saves time, which jumps can be chained together, and how to keep speed through difficult transitions. The result is a loop built around exploration, practice, optional content, and repeated attempts to cross the same environment with fewer mistakes and smoother movement.
