Danganronpa is a story-based mystery game series that combines visual novel scenes, investigation, and trial gameplay. The first game, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, follows Makoto Naegi and other students trapped inside Hope’s Peak Academy. The students are told by Monokuma that the only way to leave is to kill another student and avoid being found guilty during the class trial.

Story and Main Conflict

The game has a clear story. It is built around a killing game where students with different talents must live together while trying to survive. After a murder happens, the remaining students investigate the scene, collect evidence, and later discuss the case in a trial. The story develops through chapters, and each chapter usually includes daily life, a murder case, investigation, and a class trial.

Investigation and Class Trials

Gameplay is divided into several parts. During story sections, the player reads dialogue, talks to characters, and learns more about the group. During investigations, the player searches rooms, checks bodies, examines objects, and collects clues called Truth Bullets. These clues are later used during trials to challenge statements, find contradictions, and identify the culprit.

Main gameplay elements include:

·         reading visual novel-style story scenes;

·         talking to students during free time;

·         investigating murder scenes;

·         collecting evidence and Truth Bullets;

·         joining class trials after each case;

·         finding contradictions in statements;

·         using trial minigames to support arguments;

·         identifying the culprit before the vote.

Chapters and Progression

Danganronpa does not use levels like an action or platform game. Progression is based on chapters and story cases. Each chapter moves the story forward and usually ends with a trial. If the correct culprit is found, the surviving students continue. If the wrong person is chosen, the killer can escape, and the others lose. This rule makes the trial system central to the game’s structure.

To play effectively, the player should read dialogue carefully and remember character behavior. During investigations, every clue can matter, so it is important to check all available areas before entering the trial. In class trials, the player must compare statements with evidence and react when a contradiction appears. Danganronpa is mainly about mystery solving, character interaction, evidence gathering, and deduction inside a structured story.
