The main story follows an investigation into the manor and the events linked to the people who entered it. However, most gameplay is built around online matches rather than a linear story campaign. Players either work together as Survivors or play alone as the Hunter.
The story is presented through the manor, character backgrounds, diaries, events, and investigation elements. It is not told like a standard adventure game with one continuous path. Instead, the player learns about the setting and characters gradually. The matches represent the main gameplay structure, while the lore explains why different Survivors and Hunters are connected to the manor and its past.
Gameplay depends on which side the player chooses. Survivors must cooperate, decode cipher machines, avoid the Hunter, rescue teammates, and open the exit gates. The Hunter has a different objective: track Survivors, hit them, place them on Rocket Chairs, and stop them from escaping. Each character has special abilities or items, so matches can change depending on the selected Survivor or Hunter.
The main things players do in Identity V include:
· playing 1v4 matches as a Survivor or Hunter;
· decoding cipher machines to unlock the exit gates;
· rescuing teammates from Rocket Chairs;
· using character abilities and items;
· chasing or escaping during matches;
· learning different maps and routes;
· unlocking characters, costumes, and other content.
Identity V does not use traditional levels like a platform game. Progress comes through matches, account development, ranked play, events, character knowledge, and story content. Quick Match and Ranked Match are central modes, while Custom Mode and events can offer different ways to play. The official description also notes that modes and features such as Quick Match, Custom Mode, Events, and Logic Path are part of the game’s regular structure.
To play, the user chooses a role and enters a match. As a Survivor, the player should decode machines, watch the Hunter’s position, help teammates when possible, and move toward the exit once the gates are powered. As a Hunter, the player should patrol cipher machines, find Survivors, use abilities at the right time, and stop rescues. The main goal is to understand each role, use the map effectively, and complete the match objective before the other side does.
